If it's a mechanical problem, cooling down the drive will allow the lubrication in the mechanisms to thicken giving a few minutes of usage to recover data before failure. However, as the GParted Live CD page warns: "It is recommended to do a whole disk or partition image backup before you use GParted to resize or move your partition." But, Tried a couple times then finally just rebooted the system (which worked).  I figured since it was cancelled and/or aborted, the cancelled backup was probably corrupt or incomplete anyway, so I i got my photos i want off. I can NOT believe this worked.
